Yahoo! News - Ultrasonic squirrel is a mammalian first

"Canadian zoologists noted that in addition to making audible vocalisations in the eight kilohertz (kHz) range to other members of their community, the squirrels also made 'whisper' calls to each other, which produced only faint sounds of rushing air.
Analysed closely, these calls turned out to be ultrasonic, in the 50 kHz range, placing them way beyond the hearing of humans and of predators as well.

But the signal was strong, averaging 66.8 decibels, which is the equivalent of a loud conversation among humans. "

The Sports Network - NFL - Ricky Williams failed third drug test (for the use of marijuana)

Williams, who retired from the game last Sunday, told the paper that he was not addicted to smoking marijuana, but did not believe that it should be banned by the NFL. He said that he decided to quit football even before he tested positive for drugs for a second time last season when he incurred a $650,000 fine. Williams appealed that fine, but it was denied...

Williams, who suffers from social-anxiety disorder and was a former spokesperson for the anti-depressant Paxil, claimed marijuana helped him once he had to stop using Paxil because it didn't agree with his diet. Williams said that marijuana was better for him and did not see anything wrong with the drug since it was 'just a plant.'

When Cheney was CEO of Halliburton he created an off-shore subdivision so they could sell equipment to IRAN. This was to get around the law forbidding sales to IRAN. Think maybe some of this missing stuff is now in IRAN?

this is interesting:
3D time can perhaps explain why this universe runs on probability rather than determinism. It means that all events have many possible pasts and many possible futures and that we may be able to interact with these pasts and futures to create some of the effects traditionally regarded as magickal. On the practical level I have noticed that what I call retroactive enchantment (changing the probabilities of the past) can sometimes have interesting effects. Scientifically you can apparently do this already with delayed choice quantum experiments.

Videodrome DVD unrated, Aug. 31st

Starring James Woods and Deborah Harry in one of her first film roles, Videodrome is one of writer/director David Cronenberg’s most original and provocative works, fusing social commentary with shocking elements of sex and violence. With groundbreaking special effects makeup by Academy Award®-winner Rick Baker, Videodrome has come to be regarded as one of the most influential and mind-bending science fiction films of the 1980s, and The Criterion Collection is proud to present it in its full-length unrated edition.

Free Speech Pen at DNC 2004

How did we get to the point where some citizen speech is penned and the people who are imposing themselves with extraordinary security needs (which us taxpayers are footing the bill for) speak and roam freely. There's some kind of 1984ish inversion principle going on here.

The words of Judge Douglas P. Woodlock reviewing the case on July 22, 2004, "I at first thought, before taking a view (of the protest zone), that the characterization of the space being like a concentration camp was litigation hyperbole," he said. "Now I believe it's an understatement."

"All this magic stuff needs new terminology because it's not what people are being told it is at all. It's not all this wearying symbolic misdirection that's being dragged up from the Victorian Age, when no-one was allowed to talk plainly and everything was in coy poetic code. The world's at a crisis point and it's time to stop bullshitting around with Qabalah and Thelema and Chaos and Information and all the rest of the metaphoric smoke and mirrors designed to make the rubes think magicians are 'special' people with special powers. It's not like that. Everyone does magic all the time in different ways. 'Life' plus 'significance' = magic." - grant morrison

City Councilman Hashmel C. Turner Jr. did not offer his customary prayer at yesterday's meeting, forestalling the ACLU's threat to sue if Turner invoked the name of Jesus Christ.

But a defiant Turner also signaled that the issue is not settled, despite a recent federal court ruling that declared a similar practice by a South Carolina town council unconstitutional.

"I'm standing firm in my faith," Turner, associate minister at First Baptist Church of Love in neighboring Spotsylvania County, said before the council meeting. "There is no compromise."

In Turner's stead, Councilwoman Debby L. Girvan led the meeting in prayer, invoking "Almighty God," a nonsectarian reference permitted by U.S. Supreme Court precedent.

In the South Carolina case, plaintiff Darla Kaye Wynne sued Great Falls, S.C., officials in 2001 after they refused to stop referring to Jesus in their prayers.

Wynne, a member of the pagan-based Wiccan faith, asked council members to mention God or a nondenominational deity. She was singled out, presumably by a council member, when she refused to stand during the prayers, according to the appellate court's findings.

The Alchemical Wedding - Drawings - Dark Moon Series

Using the symbolism of astrology, during the last two years, while transiting Pluto (the lord of the underworld) squared the artist's natal Pluto, Moon (emotions and earliest conditioning) and Uranus (sudden illumination) and conjuncted his natal Sun (core sense of self), the dark, painful and hidden contents of the artist's 'shadow' became dominant in his conscious mind, forcing him into a Jungian confrontational healing odyssey not unlike Dante's 'Inferno.' This series of images is both a chronicle and a catharsis; an exorcism and an exclamation of personal truth. David Aronson - August 2002

Aerial photos show damage to Peru's Nazca Lines

Tire tracks and disregard for the site are irreparably scarring the mysterious lines and animal figures that a pre-Columbian civilization etched into a 56-kilometre stretch of Peru's southern desert centuries ago.

In the first comprehensive aerial photos taken by Peru's government since 1973, one of the most famous animal figures, the monkey, was crisscrossed by tire tracks nearly obliterating the top of its tail. The fish and spider lines showed similar scars in the 180 photos taken last month and published in local newspapers.

Scientists Say Marijuana Research Blocked

The government is violating federal law by obstructing medical marijuana research, scientists contend in lawsuits seeking faster action on applications to grow the drug.

In lawsuits to be filed Wednesday, researchers assert that Washington is refusing to act on legitimate research projects and delaying studies that could lead to marijuana's use as a prescription drug.

"There is an urgent need for an alternative supply of marijuana for medical research," said Lyle Craker, director of the Medicinal Plant Program at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, the main force behind the lawsuits...

All marijuana for research in the United States must come from a crop grown on a federally contracted farm in Mississippi. That product has been only "inconsistently available to researchers and is infamous for its low quality," the researchers contend.

Confronting Rudeness: How and why the modified should go on the offensive

Rude behavior, like all behavior, is habitual and an expression of that person’s thoughts and opinions and mediated by what they believe is appropriate or what they can get away with. And while the shock of seeing an incredible or foreign (to them) modification may distort the boundaries for them, they are not going to act horribly inconsistent with their usual behavior.

Rude people act rude because they think it is ok or that they can get away with it, and they will continue to do so until something makes them think otherwise. Every time you have the opportunity to confront rudeness you have a chance to help reform that person’s behavior. In all likelihood, it will take many confrontations to break the habit of rudeness. And, as we all are all probably familiar, it is much easier for an established habit be reinforced than broken. When you do not confront rudeness, not only do you forgo a chance at helping stop it – you actually encourage it by giving that person the positive reinforcement of getting away with it.

Madghoul.com interviews Donald Michael Kraig

A few years ago, a person asked me if I ever thought about what it would be like 50 years from now when people were still reading MM and seeing it on the same level as Crowley, Regardie, et al. My first response was, "I hope not!" MM speaks to certain people in a certain way at a certain time. I actually hope that someone will write something that will appeal to future generations in a way that is superior to MM and that my book becomes thought of as "Oh yeah, we used to read that years ago."
I truly believe that we must evolve or die. This goes for magick, too. Modern Magick was about what people are doing in this cycle of time. In the future, there will be new needs and new approaches. I hope somebody will write that book to indicate how magick has evolved.

Senator's Office Says It Arranged Meeting Space Used for Rev. Moon Meeting

Sen. John W. Warner's office acknowledged late Tuesday that the Virginia Republican arranged for religious activists to use a Senate office building last March for a ceremony in which the Rev. Sun Myung Moon declared himself the Messiah and said his teachings have helped Hitler and Stalin be "reborn as new persons."

google news query Rev. Moon

incidentally, that's what the track Monarco is about - there's elements of the service mixed in along with some bassed out fingerdrumming.

***************update: Who the fuck is sun myung moon?

Many Evangelical Christian leaders, who are "Right-Wing" have either accepted serious money from a Moon front organization, or have been unduly influenced by him...
  • Jerry Falwell -- readily admits that he accepted $2.5 million dollars from Moon in 1994 in order to bail out his Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia....
  • Timothy La Haye - ... "Most famous for his 'Left Behind' series of books and movies. Tim LaHaye's relationship with Moon goes back at least 17 years. In 1985 as was reported earlier, LaHaye was addressing several hundred evangelical Christians. He exhorted that they would go willingly to jail with the Rev. Moon in demonstration to his imprisonment over tax fraud."
  • Gary Bauer -- "Bauer's Family Research Council ... has benefited as well from Rev. Moon organizations and money. This all under the umbrella of social change and 'Christian family values' in America." Bauer is reported as part of a group of Christian leaders who have received up to $150,000 in Moon money! ["Unholy Alliance", Rense.com]
  • Bill Bright -- Founder and head of the international evangelical association, 'Campus Crusades for Christ', is also a member of the CNP. Bill Bright was also the 1996 recipient of the Illuminist Templeton Prize, making him One Million Dollars richer.
  • Paul Crouch -- Founder and Chairman of Trinity Broadcasting Network, one of the largest tele-evangelical corporations. ...
  • Dr. James Dobson, Focus On The Family
  • Rev. Billy Graham
  • Rev. D. James Kennedy -- Founder & Pastor of Coral Ridge Ministries, outspoken television evangelist, and author of the best-selling method of leading people to Jesus Christ known as "Evangelism Explosion".
  • Beverly La Haye -- Wife of Tim LaHaye, author and spokesperson for several Moon funded 'Christian' organizations, especially "Concerned Women For America". She, too, has been a public speaker for Moon functions. Another group is Womens Federation for World Peace, also headed by Beverly LaHaye and recipient of Moon funding...
  • Ralph Reed -- Former director of the Christian Coalition and member of the conservative think-tank "Heritage Foundation"....
  • Pat Robertson -- Television Evangelist, Founder of the Christian Broadcasting Network & 700 Club anchor; founder of Operation Blessing; one time Republican Party presidential candidate. National Religious Broadcasters members include Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, Jimmy Swaggart, Tim LaHaye, Billy Graham, Bill Bright and many others clearly associated with Moon. [Ibid.]
  • Rev. James Robison -- TV evangelist; Life Outreach International Ministries; associated with many Moon organizations. This evangelical leader is a member of The Council Of National Policy (CNP) and the Coalition For Religious Freedom (CRF), both of which are tied tightly into Rev. Moon.
  • Phyllis Schafly -- Christian political activist. Phyllis is a member of the CNP - Council For National Policy. [Ibid.]
  • Dr. Robert Schuller -- Pastor and Tele-evangelist from the famous 'Crystal Cathedral' in Southern California, 33° Freemason

    In other newscandals, old lies:

HAL traded with Iran through front companies: Halliburton said its Cayman Islands subsidiary, Halliburton Products & Services Limited, has its headquarters in Dubai and is active only in Iran, where it provides a range of services to the state-run Iranian National Oil Company.
Members of Lautenberg's staff said his office has passed to the Treasury Department some documents that had been sent by NIOC's British arm, Kala, to Halliburton's subsidiary in 1997 and 1998 seeking bids for oil services work in Iran.
In addition to that subsidiary, Halliburton has three British-based units and a Swedish-based unit that conduct business with Iran, the company said.
The United States first imposed economic sanctions against Iran in 1979 after the Islamic revolution when student fundamentalists held 52 American hostages for 444 days. Those sanctions were tightened under Presidents Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton, although some exemptions were granted in 2000.

More administrative lies perpetuated around the world: Downing Street has admitted to The Observer that repeated claims by Tony Blair that '400,000 bodies had been found in Iraqi mass graves' is untrue, and only about 5,000 corpses have so far been uncovered.

    and in Iowa:

Federal prosecutors claim they built 35 terrorism-related cases in Iowa in the two years after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, but most of the defendants have questionable links to violent extremism...
Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen Patrick O'Meara, who heads the criminal division of the U.S. Attorney's Office in Des Moines, said the "anti-terrorism" label was used in the airport cases because the crimes were discovered as part of a specific initiative to snare potential terrorists.
He said the Justice Department directs prosecutors to assign credit for an arrest during a targeted terrorism operation, "even where the offense is not obviously a federal crime of terrorism."

On a different note, all the material on Lilith was revealing, and kicked off some thoughts or half-thoughts. Firstly, I remember hearing an interpretation or a version of the “Adam’s first wife” story wherein Adam wanders into Yahweh’s secret lab before the Frankenstein work on his future mate has been completely finished. Lilith is still skinless. Adam can see all the phlegm and shit and viscera. He turns around to God and he goes “What the fuck’s this? You said you were making me a bird, but this looks like the peeled bloke in that first Hellraiser video.” And Lilith, obviously, she hears this and goes into one and storms off in a strop to fornicate with demons and give birth to monsters and abominations. The point of all this, probably, is that if you should happen to walk in upon a woman when she hasn’t got her skin on, don’t go on at her and make a fuss. Just look pleased-but-quizzical and say “Hmm. There’s something different. No, don’t tell me what it is.” - alan moore

Strange Brew Brings Chemicals to Life

    by Cliff Pickover, Reality Carnival
Minutes after the chemicals were mixed, a marble-sized blob formed. It had a semipermeable membrane. Daughter cells began to bud off from the original cell. Wild!

Most chemical mixtures quickly settle into an unchanging state. 31. Oklahoma and New York Cities - Murder in the First Degree - Ritual Sacrifice and the New World Order

Whereas the organization established by the Knights Templar in Europe and the Middle East in the 12th and 13th centuries was an early attempt to form a New World Order based on a system of financial institutions in a cabal involving the use of occult practices, America would one day be the center of the second attempt at forming this same New World Order. While this may seem difficult to believe, if we take a look back at the history of these organizations, and as suggested by the long-term investments of time in such buildings as the Gothic cathedrals, the leaders of these organizations which comprise the hydra-headed NOW do not plan for the short term. How can this be? It is because, in their studies and subsequent use of the ancient mysteries and traditions laid down by Hermes/Thoth, and others, they have learned to master the incarnational cycle so that they are able to incarnate within the same families, thus inheriting the rewards of their work from previous lifetimes.... - Peter Farley

A friendly Kerry supporter named Mr. Shenk let us use his front yard to display our banners. Now comes the good part. After waiting around for about 45 minutes, the motorcade passed by us again. A few police cars, followed by a van or two, drove by. Then, a Bush/Cheney bus passed, followed by a second one going slower. At the front of this second bus was The W himself, waving cheerily at his supporters on the other side of the highway. Adam, Brendan, and I rose our banner (the More Trees, Less Bush one) and he turned to wave to our side of the road. His smile faded, and he raised his left arm in our direction. And then, George W. Bush, the 43rd president of the United States of America, extended his middle finger.

I'm tempted, nay, damn near convinced I am going to vote for Michael Badnarik. I don't even know if that's his name. John Kerry (bonesman) is going to win, & his running mate John Edwards is the darling of the international bankers... yeesh.
a kitty whispered in my ear that it'd be better if Bush stayed in office - once Kerry gets in all that dirt digging on the Bushes will be more or less useless, and the researchers are going to have to start all over again researching the all-new corruption Kerry will bring with him into the office. I'll vote for either Nader or Badnarik at this point, since I can't bring myself to vote for something as unamerican as a bush, but I agree with the premise: better the devil you know right out there in the conjuring circle than some devious imp trolling about in the shadows

    "War on Pornography"

    he looks ordained by god:

Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff, speaking to about 40 people Monday at the McKay Events Center in Orem, is developing an online child-protection registry.

    and he ain't fucking around:

Wielding a golden sword, Shurtleff warned any violators that his office will prosecute them.

Kalte Farben | Trust In Opium

The higher BPM tracks on this "Best Of" album don't just get in your face, they redefine the mental boundaries to which music can take you. The interspersed sound-scapes provide a gateway for the listener to return from the intense high that has almost brought on sensory overload.

Alzheimer's Mutations Found in Brain Cells

Most DNA is carried on the chromosomes. But an important form is found in the mitochondria of cells, which are structures that help provide energy.

Douglas Wallace of the Center for Molecular and Mitochondrial Medicine and Genetics at the University of California at Irvine and colleagues looked at the brains of 23 people who died of Alzheimer's and 40 people who died free of dementia.

reminds me of the mitochondrial Eve:

Although researchers named her after the Biblical Eve, mitochondrial Eve was not the sole living female of her day. Researchers believe as many as 20,000 individuals of Eve's species may have lived at the same time as her. But of the females of her day, only Eve produced an unbroken line of daughters that persists today. As a result, only Eve's mitochondria have descendants in the cells of living humans, and only from Eve do all living people descend along their maternal lines.

    **************update
I spent most of the evening listening to people celebrating freedom by setting off fireworks illegally while police officers cruised through the neighborhoods looking for people to arrest, which amuses me to no end.

& I did it all with my muse on my arm, at my side. distracted? been begging the question I know:
yeah, I'm back to the grindstone.

    so
expect a bit less from here while I get back into the book

New guidelines gut HIV prevention — and endanger young people’s lives

“Kids are being taught that condoms don’t work, while real life-saving HIV education is being eviscerated across the board,” fumes Sean Strub, founder of POZ, the magazine for the HIV-positive community. And, Strub points out, the Bush administration has hamstrung AIDS organizations, “which are faced with the terrible choice of prioritizing care for existing HIV-positive clients over speaking out against the new CDC rules and risking losing their federal funding.”

There’s only a tiny window of opportunity to try to get the new CDC censorship rules changed before they go into effect (the deadline for public comments is August 16 — they may be e-mailed to HIVComments@cdc.gov or faxed to 404-639-3125.) But when the regs begin to be felt, just watch already-rising AIDS infection rates really soar.

Ghosts in the Machines | What Happens to Your Online Self When You Die?

With acquaintances all over the country, if not the globe, multiple e-mail accounts and messenger screen names, various message-board and profile-site accounts, mailing lists that flood in boxes, PayPal accounts, e-banking accounts, and online video-game accounts, those who die with well-developed online presences can have far more of an effect on the lives of those who survive them than do those without a computer at all.

someday people will realize just how haunted the internet is

    Freemasonry In Early America

If venturing into business, a Mason was assured a loan simply by giving the proper hand- shake to a Masonic banker. Should a Mason choose politics as a career, he was guaranteed votes of all Masons who had reached the Royal Arch degree (13th degree in Scottish Rite and 7th degree in York Rite), which oath reads:

I will promote a companion Royal Arch Mason’s political preferment in preference to another of equal qualifications.

Once in political office, the Mason must vote the dictates of his Masonic superiors. In the Masonic book, Webb’s Monitor, we read:

Right or wrong his very existence as a Mason hangs upon obedience to the powers immediately set above him. The one unpardonable crime in a Mason is contumacy [insubordination] or disobedience.

Masonic partiality also permits Master Masons to commit criminal acts and find protection among Masons. The Master Mason swears:

A Master Mason’s secrets given to me in charge as such, and I knowing him to be such, shall remain as secure and inviolable in my breast as in his own…murder and treason excepted.

If a Mason is a defendant in court, Masonic partiality extends to the witness stand. In the Masonic Hand Book we read:

You must conceal all the crimes of your brother Masons, except murder and treason, and these only at your own option, and should you be summoned as a witness against a brother Mason, be always sure to shield him. Prevaricate, don’t tell the whole truth in this case, keep his secrets, forget the most important points. It may be perjury to do this, it is true, but you’re keeping your obligations, and remember if you live up to your obligations strictly, you’ll be free from sin.
glad that doesn't happen these days. like in government, say, or banking
