The Gspot: Esozone

The Gspot: Esozone wherein Joseph Matheny with Klint and Jillian from Esozone, talking about the new open source and unconference model being used this year. After EsoZone Portland 2009, we will release the EsoZone Protocol, a set of guidelines similar to an open source software license that will enable organizers to host an EsoZone in their own city

Monetized Memetics

Good marketing tells you what you didn't know about a product that you may very well be interested in, and the product itself should deliver on the promises implicit in the advertisement. Good social marketing invites you back, and makes it easy for you to share the message with others, involving not just immediate customers, but also effective repeaters of your core brand message. If the internet is an extension of one's nervous system, then we're all sharing a portion of our neural networks. Memetics is the approach of applying all of the above to deeply root one's brand into an ongoing cultural discourse.

War breaks out within the marijuana legalization movement (part 1)

War breaks out within the marijuana legalization movement (part 1): "This sea change in attitude, by the American People, is unsettling to both, the Cannabusiness Community and the Government, because they both profit enormously by treating Marijuana (e.g., Cannabis) through a policy of prohibition or through a quasi-prohibition model known as the Medical Marijuana model. They both know that if adult Americans ever get the right to 'grow their own,' without taxation or regulation their profits will evaporate over night."

Active Denial System - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Active Denial System - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: "ADS works by directing electromagnetic radiation, specifically, high-frequency microwave radiation at a frequency of 95 GHz[6] (a wavelength of 3.2 mm), toward the subjects. The waves excite water molecules in the epidermis to around 130 °F (55 °C), causing an intensely painful sensation of extreme heat. While burning the skin[7][8], the burning sensation is similar to that of an incandescent light bulb being pressed against the skin.[6] The focused beam can be directed at targets at a range in excess of 700 meters.[9] The device can penetrate thick clothing, although not walls.[10]"

The Associated Press: G-20 march turns chaotic on streets of Pittsburgh

The Associated Press: G-20 march turns chaotic on streets of Pittsburgh: "Police are throwing canisters spewing smoke after ordering several hundred protesters to stop their march in opposition of the Group of 20 summit in Pittsburgh. The march does not have a city permit and police have declared it an unlawful assembly. They played an announcement over a loudspeaker telling people to leave or face arrest or 'other police action.'"

FCC: Congress said we could spank Comcast for P2P blocking - Ars Technica

FCC: Congress said we could spank Comcast for P2P blocking - Ars Technica: "'Congress created the FCC for cases such as this one. Congress gave the agency broad and adaptable jurisdiction so that it can keep pace with rapidly evolving communications technologies,' the FCC wrote on Monday in a brief submitted to the United States Court of Appeals Before the District of Columbia Circuit. 'The Internet is such a technology.' This could be a tough sell for the DC Circuit, given that on the same day as the filing, FCC Chair Julius Genachowski called for the agency to turn its Internet Policy Statement into full-fledged net neutrality rules, along with new principles of transparency and non-discrimination. The policy statement commits the Commission to ensuring that consumers can use the legal applications of their choice on the 'Net. But critics say that it's just a guideline-type philosophical statement and nothing more, and it lacks the Congressional backing needed to stand up in court."

Seth's Blog: Everyone gets paid on commission

Seth's Blog: Everyone gets paid on commission: "The Washington Post recently laid off a columnist because his blog posts didn't get enough web traffic. Of course, in the old days, the newspaper had no real way to tell which columns got read and which ones didn't. So journalists were lulled into the sense that it didn't really matter. The Times quotes Jay Rosen, a journalism professor at NYU, “It’s an unusual public rationale for serious newspaper people, that’s for sure.” Wrong tense. It's not going to be unusual for long. In fact, in a digital world where everything can be measured, we all work on commission."

Query Shark: #133

Query Shark: #133: "I am seeking representation for my first novel entitled: “THE FINAL CLUE.” This 160,000, word crime novel is set in New York City and is the first of a possible series. I've stopped reading right here. 160,000 words is too long. I don't care if it's more beautifully written than James Lee Burke, the ugly truth is I can't sell a long ass novel right now. Pare it down to 120,000 and better yet, under 100,000 words."

Self-Publishing: Future Prerequisite | www.publetariat.com: "I predict that within 5 years, self-publishing will no longer be an option, but a prerequisite for unknown, aspiring authors hoping to land a mainstream publishing deal. It’s the logical, inevitable next step in author platform."

Perez, the ophthalmologist at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami who operated on Thornton. 'So we kind of recreate the environment of the mouth in the eye.'"

Drum Machine Circles in Texas | Alterati: The GSpot- The Inside Look at the Outside Culture: "“They must’ve put power on the bridge for yuppies to charge their laptops but it’s been put to better use by musicians many times. What’s really cool about it is, in fact, the locale and central proximity to the heart of the city. Very nice sound on open water/air too.. It’s over the the central lake just south of downtown, near the shifting skyline being taken over by banks and condos.”"

Gene Therapy Cures Color-Blind Monkeys | Wired Science | Wired.com: "two color-blind monkeys have seen red and green for the first time. Except in its extreme forms, color blindness isn’t a debilitating condition, but it’s a convenient stand-in for other types of blindness that might be treated with gene therapy."

  • Early Modern Notes » From the DNB: the last convicted witch in England - When she could get satisfaction from neither the JP (who refused to take any action) nor the local church minister's arbitration, she was heard to say if she could not have justice here she would have it elsewhere , dangerous words for any witch to utter , as the biographer (Owen Davies) points out. Shortly afterwards the minister's daughter was afflicted with terrible fits and delusions (Salem is, by the way, merely the most famous example of cases where children and adolescents played this kind of prominent role) and Jane immediately came under suspicion. She was arrested and searched for teats (which would have represented a sign that she had been suckling a demon familiar'); none were found.
